"I believe the function of an artist is to find ways of communicating, in sensible, sensuous terms, those experiences which do not find adequate expression in the daily round of living and for which, therefore, no ready made means of communication exists."
- Romare Bearden

From an early age I discovered the multiple variables behind human expression. My older brother Danny has a progressive disorder, which over the years has caused the degeneration of his mind. When using traditional words, he talks in a way that others do not understand. Danny learned to communicate with drawing and painting when he was very young. Through his art, my family has been able to sense his mental state. When his brush strokes are thick, short and rushed, we know that he is feeling anxious. This is the reason I thought I would be a psychologist.

I struggled through, reading theories and case studies, always considering this education to be a chore. On a whim, I took Photography level 1. This course changed my life. It was as though a light turned on within me, and I was flooded with ideas. I experimented with film, light, materials, and equipment. Over exposing, under exposing, destroying roll after roll of film and some how, always had an image I was excited about.

"No matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer it has chosen."
- Minor White

Through these years of practice, I became very familiar with the technical elements of photography. I began to dive deep into the process. Through exploration, my work lost the "snapshot" qualities of photography. I had discovered photographyıs intricacies and possibilities. Using motion and playing with extrusive time. The lines between painting and photography blurred. This became my instrument for articulation.

My brother, Danny, has been a crucial piece in my development as an artist. Expression is an integral part of human nature. Art has a distinct communication which spans time and space, and has made it critical throughout history. My work consists of that for which I simply donıt have the words.

"The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint always whatever passes through my head, without any other consideration."
 Frida Kahlo
